Founded in 2013 by elite marathon runner Jonny Mellor, JM Coaching has grown from a small training group in Hoylake, Wirral (UK) into a worldwide coaching team.

How It Started

Founded in 2013

JM Coaching was launched in 2013 by Jonny Mellor, an elite distance runner with a marathon personal best of 2:08:45. Initially Jonny started coaching as a way to financially support his own athletic career while giving something back to the sport he loves, helping others achieve their goals through online run coaching.

Having started with a small group of athletes out of the Underground Training Station Gym in Hoylake in 2013, Jonny has since grown his coaching services to help support a number of athletes worldwide. Jonny is proud to offer online coaching that is based on real human communication, supported by science and developed with experience from working with runners of varying abilities.

Sophie Coaching

With over 20 years competing at the highest level, Jonny is strongly positioned to offer training tips and advice. Over a distinguished career, Jonny has competed in over 600 events as shown on his Power of 10 profile, including 17 marathons around the world including London, Berlin, New York and Chicago. With this experience, Jonny and his team can help you prepare both physically and mentally to reach your goals.

Jonny ran his marathon best aged 38 (two weeks shy of 39!) showing that age is no barrier when you look after yourself and train smartly. This experience is what we are proud to pass on to runners, with one of our key areas of success working with masters athletes fitting training in around work, family and managing recovery as an older runner.

Expanding in 2020

In 2020 Jonny expanded the coaching team, welcoming some close training partners on board. Across the coaching team, they have been fortunate to train and race in some of the biggest settings in the world including the Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games, surrounding themselves with top class athletes and coaches along the way. Learning from an elite runner can help you to understand the importance of timing, structure, periodisation and training SMART to achieve your goals and aims.

Over the years it has become clear it is not just about training as hard as you can, but getting the right balance of training, recovery, family and work life to train not just more, but better. JM Coaching goes the extra mile to offer coaching services that fit in around your current daily schedule, rather than having to fit your life around your training programme.

Improvement comes through dedication, passion and when engagement is long-term and integrated. Following a detailed assessment of your training history, lifestyle and working backwards from your goals and aims, we help you achieve your targets.

Jonny's career stretches over a remarkable two decades. Jonny ran his first ever 10km back in 2007 as an U20, running 29:48. Since then he has run sub 30 minutes 35 times, including six sub-30 alone in 2025. Running his first marathon in 2015, Jonny has run quicker than 2:14:00 on nine occasions with five of them inside 2:11:00. With a range stretching from 1:51 for 800m, a sub-4-minute mile right up to his 2:08:45 marathon, it showcases remarkable consistency and longevity within the sport.

We believe in the power of an omni approach to running. Our programmes do not just focus on mileage or copy what we do as athletes. We provide guidance on nutrition, strength training, injury prevention and mental resilience. A well-rounded approach is essential for long-term success and injury-free running.

Using TrainingPeaks, you can access your training plans and resources anytime, anywhere. We offer ongoing support through regular check-ins, feedback on your progress, and adjustments to your plan as needed.

Adam Coaching

Research proves AI-generated plans are not as good as those written by coaches. Our experience is leading within the coaching industry, with athletes who have been there and done it and understand the importance of developing a strong athlete-coach relationship. We are runners too, and all work with our own personal coaches, as we understand just how important that relationship is.

We can help you train more consistently, reduce your risk of injuries and take the guesswork away from your training. We have experience of working with runners chasing a wide range of goals, from ticking off marathon majors to taking your first steps and going on to represent your country in the age groups. We are proud and passionate about helping runners across the world achieve their goals.

When you sign up for coaching with us, we chat about your running history, previous race results and injuries. We understand where you are at right now and how best to fit training into your week around everything else you have going on. Once we have a clear picture of where you are and where you are going, we devise a plan personal to you. Your plan is then delivered on a weekly or fortnightly basis so you can relax and focus on the running itself.

As someone who juggles 100-plus mile weeks with family and full-time work, my life is always on the go and I appreciate just how important having a good plan is. As head coach I encourage our coaches and runners to stay curious. Ask questions, seek feedback and learn throughout your coaching journey. As coaches we are realists and adopt a mindset of improvement, not perfection, when balancing everyday lives around training.

For me, the worlds of training and business are very similar. When training, all aspects of my life improve and make me a better person. The key is to be disciplined, and having a training programme enables that structure in your life.

We do not necessarily want to conquer the world, but we do get immense pleasure from being in the corner and helping likeminded runners like ourselves. I feel very fortunate to have an incredible group of coaches working alongside me and I am so happy that we can help pass on our years of experience and knowledge to runners just like you.
